Stay Focused At Work This Summer

Memorial Day has come and gone and summer is in full swing. But as the temperature spikes, so does the effort it takes to stay focused at work. With #FOMO (fear of missing out) at its peak, and rooftop happy hours and outdoor barbecues topping to-do lists, we may need something to keep us on track in the office. So here are a few tips to help you stay satisfied both in and out of the office this summer.

Take Advantage of the Lull:

As things slow down at work, that doesn’t mean you have to. Summer is the perfect time to start things you’ve been putting off or take on new responsibilities. Use the downtime to seek out solutions to work challenges or catch up on industry trends. Staying busy will benefit you in the long run and help to pass the time.

Restructure Your Day:

Not many of us have the opportunity to take lengthy breaks during the workday, but we certainly have five minutes. The Pomodoro Technique, for example, breaks up time into 25 minute intervals of work and 5 minute breaks. These concentrated units of time help fuel productivity, manage distractions (I’m looking at you, Instagram) and avoid burnout throughout the day.

Take a REAL Lunch:

Far too often our 30 minute lunches are spent right where we start and end our day – at the computer. Make a point to get outside at lunch, whether it’s to grab a quick bite or take a walk.  A little midday Vitamin D and fresh air can boost your mood and give your brain the break it needs to finish strong.

Get Mobile:

We may not all have the flexibility to work from home, but some of us may be able to go as far as the nearest coffee shop. Wifi and a change of scenery can do wonders for creativity, so if you have a project that allows for a brief hiatus, take advantage.

Deskercise:

Up your fitness game at work so that when the time comes to cash in some of that PTO for a getaway, you’ll be beach-body ready. Engage your core to keep the back straight throughout the day. Throw in some leg lifts and shoulder shrugs for that extra burn while sitting. Head to the water cooler more frequently to up your intake and partake in some calf raises or squats while waiting for the microwave or coffee maker.

Look at that, you just spent five minutes reading about how to better yourself. You’re on the right track!
